Asian lions danced in the streets of uptown Chicago this afternoon to celebrate the lunar new year. The yellow and red lions (unicorns in the Vietnamese culture, and often called dragons) entertained the crowd and brought luck to local businesses. They stretched for lettuce greens to which were attached red envelopes with cash for their work. The lions don't really like the lettuce and toss it, shredded, up in the air. As the lions dance, the drums pound. From shop to shop they wiggle and jump. The band from a local high school Navy JROTC program accompanied the lions for the official part of the parade and then played for the crowd before dispersing and letting the lions get to their real job of bestowing luck.
